How to Clear Your Browser Cache

A cache is temporary storage for website data, which is used to improve your browsing experience. However, sometimes the cache can store outdated information, and needs to be cleared.

If you simply need a quick way to clear your cache, most modern browsers support the ctrl-shift-del (Option-Command-E for Safari users)key combination to bring up the privacy settings dialog. Once this dialog is on your screen, simply select the 'cache' option from the settings available, and continue. If this method does not work for you, please find your browser and version below for specific instructions.

If your browser version does not appear in the above list, you may have an older browser. For instructions on clearing your cache in older browsers please use this article instead.

For Google Chrome

  • Click the Chrome menu icon in the upper right corner
  • Choose Preferences
  • Click the Show advanced settings... link.
  • Click the Clear Browsing Data button in the Privacy section
  • If you still have a problem, repeat the steps above and restart the computer.

For FireFox 4.0 & up

  • Click on the Firefox menu button in the upper left corner of the browser window
  • In the right hand pane of the drop down menu hover over History
  • Select Clear Recent History
  • From the drop down box select the time range to clear (Everything is recommended)
  • Select the down arrow next to Details
  • From the list of options remove all the check marks except for Cache
  • Click the Clear Now button to finish clearing your cache
  • If you still have a problem, repeat the steps above and restart the computer.

For Internet Explorer 8 & 9

  • Click Safety from the Internet Explorer menubar ( or the gear for IE 9 then Safety)
  • From the list of options select Temporary Internet files
  • Remove the selection for Preserve Favorites Website data if it is selected
  • Click the Delete button at the bottom of the dialog to finalize changes
  • If you still have a problem, repeat the steps above and restart the computer.

For Internet Explorer 7

  • Click on Tools (or the gear icon) from the Internet Explorer menu bar
  • Select Internet Options from the drop down menu
  • Select the General tab if not already selected
  • From the Browsing history section click the Delete button
  • From the Temporary Internet Files section click the Delete button
  • Confirm that you wish to delete all temporary Internet Explorer files

​For Safari 6 and up for Mac OS X

  • From the Safari Menu select Preferences
  • In the preferences dialog select the Advanced tab
  • At the bottom of the advanced tab, check the box for Show Develop menu
  • Close the preferences dialog
  • From the Develop menu select Empty Caches

For Safari 1.x - 5.x for Mac OS X

  • Open Safari.
  • Click on Safari in the toolbar and select Empty Cache...
  • When prompted Are You Sure, click Empty.
  • Exit your Safari browser completely and re-launch Safari.
  • If you still have a problem, repeat the steps above and restart the computer.

For Opera

  • Select the Opera Menu
  • From the drop down menu hover over Settings
  • From this menu select Delete Private Data
  • In the dialog that appears, select Detailed Options
  • From these options, remove the check marks on all but ​Delete entire cache
  • Click the Delete​ button to clear your cache.
  • If you still have a problem, repeat the steps above and restart the computer.
